The criminal case against the former deputy of the suspended general prosecutor Ruslan Popov, and his accomplices, was submitted for examination to the magistrates of the Chisinau Court based in Buiucani. The unknown businesses of the prosecutor Popov were revealed by the journalists from the Anticoruptie.md portal and described in several investigations based on which the anti-corruption prosecutors filed a complaint.

On May 27, 2022, the prosecutors concluded the criminal investigation, after which they offered both the former prosecutor and his accomplices the opportunity to get acquainted with the materials of the criminal case.

Subsequently, the defense party made several requests and steps to complete the criminal investigation. Therefore, after examining them, the prosecutors drew up an indictment and sent the case to court.

Former Deputy Prosecutor General Ruslan Popov and his accomplices are being charged with one count of illicit enrichment in a separate case.

The former prosecutor is also accused of committing eight episodes of fake statement on  assets and personal interests.

Detained in early October 2021, Popov was in custody for nearly 30 days in the National Anti-Corruption Center's isolation facility.

Initially, the Chisinau District Court ordered his house arrest, but a few days later the Chisinau Court of Appeal granted the anti-corruption prosecutors' request to place him in solitary confinement.

Subsequently, the Chisinau Court of Appeal changed the decisions of the court of first instance against Popov and extended his house arrest. The former prosecutor escaped the precautionary measure on the eve of the winter holidays.

Prosecutor Popov was suspended from office during the investigation, and in March 2021 he applied for release from the system, which was accepted.

Ruslan Popov is accused in a criminal case of illicit enrichment. The prosecutor would be the final beneficiary of a modern orchard and a refrigerator for storing the fruits registered in the name of his father, a pensioner from the village of Milestii Mici.

However, Ruslan Popov did not plead guilty.
