Igor Popa was detained on November 9, 2021, and a criminal case was filed against him for illicit enrichment. The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office started the criminal case against Igor Popa based on a journalistic investigation carried out by reporters of the Center for Investigative Journalism about his luxury house in a residential block of flats in Chisinau.

The case filed for false statements meets five charges and is handled by the Chisinau Court. The criminal investigation into Popa's name was started in November 2021 based on a reasonable suspicion of false statements. He was accused of not including on purpose some data in the statements on property and personal interests for the period 2018-2020 about the properties owned by his concubine, which represented their common living space.

The case for illicit enrichment is also being investigated by the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office.

Igor Popa has been the subject of several journalistic investigations. During the communist government, he was accused of fabricating files and ordering the trial of young protesters at police stations.

During the government led by Vladimir Plahotniuc, prosecutor Igor Popa was promoted to deputy general prosecutor.

Suspended Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo said in an interview last summer that Igor Popa is the prosecutor he trusts and that he is ready, if necessary, to go with him in combat recognition.
