DOC // How the crusade against the CEC of former Socialist Gaik Vartanean, now a MAN member, ended
Judge Igor Barbacaru rejected the lawsuit filed by former Socialist MP Gaik Vartanean, who joined the MAN party, against the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), after the institution refused to provide him with information regarding the presidential elections. The ruling was delivered on Thursday, May 22, and may be appealed to the Chișinău Court of Appeal – Centru within 30 days.
In March this year, the MP also called for a revision of the composition of the CEC by dismissing two members appointed by PAS, including the CEC president, and allocating the vacant positions to the parliamentary or extra-parliamentary opposition “to ensure balance within the CEC.”
Vartanean went to court requesting specific data after the second round of the presidential election. He asked for log files from the voter participation registration process in the SIAS “Elections” system for both rounds of the 2024 presidential elections (containing only the fields listed in the initial request, without voters’ personal data), as well as a detailed technical report regarding the incident/malfunction in the SIAS “Elections” system on the evening of November 3, 2024.
The court found that the MP's requests were unfounded.
MP Gaik Vartanean left the Bloc of Communists and Socialists on December 15, 2022, announcing that he was joining Chișinău Mayor Ion Ceban and the MAN party. His departure angered his former parliamentary colleagues, who demanded that he give up his seat.
