Former liberal-democrat MP Sergiu Ceauș, who is accused of complicity in passive corruption in a case involving former president of the Criuleni district, Vitalie Rotaru, is facing a relaxed trial process. The examination of the case concerning embezzlement of European funds has not taken place in practice for five years since it was opened. The Center for Investigative Journalism has uncovered several schemes through which money provided by the European Union was siphoned into the pockets of corrupt officials.

Although a further appearance in the first instance was scheduled for Thursday, January 26th, the defendants will not appear in court until February, after corrections were made to the court portal.

The case was transmitted to the Chișinău Court of Justice in October 2017. From December 1st, 2017, when the first examination session was to take place, and until June 27th, 2022, all sessions were postponed or did not take place for various reasons. In five years, there were two attempts to examine the case, one of which ended with postponements, this time due to the non-appearance of the defendant Vitalie Rotaru. The last session, on January 18th, had the same fate.

Between 2011 and 2012, the Criuleni District Council became the beneficiary of two projects - CRING "Cross-border Inventory of degraded lands" and "CBC RUR Waste" - integrated waste management in the Criuleni district, under the Romania-Ukraine-Moldova 2007-2013 Operational Program.

The project was initiated to build a household waste dump in the village of Hrușova, Criuleni district, to serve three municipalities with a population of around 8,000. To implement the project, 2.5 million lei and 1.3 million euros were allocated from the Criuleni district budget in the form of a grant from the European Union. Despite the allocation of funds, the projects did not come to fruition.

In 2020, Anticoruptie.md wrote about the luxury in which Sergiu Ceauș lived, providing images of a property he intended to sell.

Being a PLDM member since 2007 and a member of the PLDM National Political Council since 2011, Ceauș held several high-ranking positions in the executive and became a MP on February 15th, 2018, after Iurie Leanca chose the vice-premier for European integration role. However, just over two weeks later, the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova officially expelled him from the party.
