Nicolae Chitoroagă, former head of the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS), is being investigated in a criminal case for illicit enrichment. The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office started the investigations after it took note of an investigation that was carried out by the Center for Investigative Journalism.

Sources within the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office informed us that Nicolae Chitoroagă is suspected of having contributed to the seizure of a fish farming business that he registered on the name of his relatives, his godfather and one of his brothers.

The same sources said that no criminal case has been filed yet, but information is collected to this effect.

Nicolae Chitoroagă resigned from the seat of chief of PCCOCS on June 26, 2018, a position he held for three years. He said that the reason for resignation would be "enormous pressure on the institution" and on him. The next day after he vacated the seat of head of PCCOCS, Chitoroagă was transferred to the position of ordinary prosecutor in the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor's Office. Later, Chitoroagă went on leave.
