The former director of the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS), Vasile Botnari, suspected of illicit enrichment, will be investigated in a state of pre-trial detention. The Chisinau court based in Ciocana issued an arrest warrant against Botnari for 25 days after anti-corruption prosecutors requested 30 days.

The trial happened in the absence of Vasile Botnari, who was represented in court by the lawyer Vasile Nicoară. Defendant stated that his client did not plead guilty and refused to be escorted to court for personal reasons.

Botnari will be detained in the isolator of the National Anticorruption Center. The decision of the Chisinau Court can be challenged in the hierarchically superior court.

Prosecutors have accused the former SIS director of implementing a plan to procure cars and houses through intermediaries in 2014–2019 and passing them on to his relatives or trusted people.

Vasile Botnari was recognized and questioned as a suspect in the crime of illicit enrichment. Following the raids, the prosecutors say that they seized several documents, a mobile phone and an iPod. The suspect made statements about the circumstances of the case, but he did not plead guilty.

According to an investigation conducted by reporters at the Center for Investigative Journalism in March 2021, Vasile Botnari's current land and real estate became his property during his tenure as one of Vladimir Plahotniuc's relatives and protégés.

Vasile Botnari never reported any housing in his statements on property, signed as a civil servant. The former official declared only his salary income though his family had businesses and some of them were managed by his wife, Natalia.

Vasile Botnari owns, starting with May 2004, a 30% share of SRL Vabaro Lux, a company specialized in the sale of wood and carpentry.

In 2008, Natalia Botnari founded the company A&N SERVICE, specialized in servicing. She was always the only manager of the company. In 2019, the company's turnover amounted to 1.33 million lei.
