The former head of the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS), Nicolae Chitoroagă, returns to the dock on Wednesday after a 3-month break. The file for illicit enrichment was started following the publication of an investigation by the Center for  Investigative Journalism from Moldova (CIJM)

The case, which began examination in November 2021, is currently at the stage of presenting evidence to the prosecution. Of the 18 court hearings scheduled after the distribution of the file, almost half were postponed for various reasons, such as a member of the court panel abstaining and having to be replaced, a magistrate being on medical leave, the prosecutor being sick, and the state of emergency. Until February 3, the court has scheduled three more hearings.

Chitoroagă was detained on November 21, 2019, for 72 hours, on suspicion of illicit enrichment. He was placed in custody for 15 days and then released.

The investigation into his case, "Camouflaged affair of the Chitoroagă prosecutor near the Năpădeni forest", was published on the Anticoruptie.md portal on July 27, 2019, by the CIJM, which revealed that Chitoroagă allegedly owns a fish farming business in the village of Năpădeni, Ungheni district, registered in the name of his brother and godfather, which he had not declared. The business was allegedly taken over through a fraudulent scheme from the Mardari brothers from the village of Năpădeni.

The former general prosecutor, Alexandr Stoianoiglo, who was in office during Chitoroagă's detention, accused the former head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, Viorel Morari, of the file being a revenge. Later, Stoianoglo improperly granted a single allowance of 270,000 lei to Nicolae Chitoroagă, despite the fact that Chitoroagă was being prosecuted and therefore not eligible for the allowance.
