The Deputy Chief of the Chisinau Prosecutor's Office, Adrian Popenco, resigned and also submitted a request to leave the system. Popenco has been targeted by the media several times for alleged corruption and has been the subject of an investigation conducted by the Center for Investigative Journalism.

Adrian Popenco motivated his departure from the system by the fact that he wants to try other activities. After CIJM’s investigation, the National Integrity Authority reacted and started an investigation, but no findings were announced so far.

In the autumn of 2020, Popenco was denounced by the former employee of the National Anticorruption Center, Ruslan Harcenco, as one of the beneficiaries of the 100,000 euro bribe offered at the beginning of 2016 by the president of the Moldovan Basketball Federation, Octavian Vucol, accused in -a scam file. The law enforcement officer denied the accusation.

The CIJM has previously published an investigation showing that Adrian Popenco lives in a million-dollar house located in a luxury neighborhood in Dumbrava, near the capital, and has been driving a state-of-the-art Mercedes for three years. However, the lawman claims that nothing belongs to him. According to him, the house belongs to his in-laws and the car belongs to a generous relative.

The National Integrity Authority notified itself and started, in December 2020, to verify the fortune of prosecutor Popenco. To date, no finding has been issued.
